The Paso Robles Education Alliance (PREA) held its annual fundraiser September 21st, 2013 at Pear Valley Winery. The “Aloha Affair” was a big success, with guests enjoying a silent auction, casino gaming, dj with dancing and food catered by the Culinary Arts Academy. PREA raised over $20,000 at the event thanks to generous sponsors and guests.
PREA is a non-profit, community based organization that supports and enhances the educational environment of the Paso Robles Public Schools.
The PREA Board of Directors awarded $10,000 this year to teacher grants. Teachers in the Paso Robles School District were able to apply for grants of up to $500/teacher until the November 15th, 2013 deadline. All submitted grants were reviewed by a PREA committee and awarded based on required criteria. Examples of grants were used for programs such as Art Docent funds, Battle of the Books supplies, Science Project Materials and other special educational projects.
“PREA grants go directly to the classroom. This is money from the community to support teachers’ educational projects, replace outdated classroom materials, or help install technology to enhance the teacher’s ability to teach lesson plans. Teachers are excited about these changes and use them to the full advantage of our students,” says PREA President Jeff Railsback.
PREA also plans to hold its 2nd Annual “Jumpstart to College” on December 20th at Flamson and Daniel Lewis Middle Schools. Four Paso Robles High School graduates will be speaking about their road to get to college and what they recommend to middle school students to get them ‘jump started’. These exceptional young adults were chosen to receive PREA Scholarships when they graduated high school. They each are attending a four year college and were high achievers while at Paso Robles High School. They are great role models for all of the students, and their presentation is incredibly valuable to help more of our kids go on to college.
